Osseous Surgery

Do I Need Osseous Surgery?

Eliminating the pocketing about the teeth, gives you the best prognosis for controlling the disease process and effectively keeping teeth and benefiting your overall systemic health.

Osseous Surgery

Osseous surgery, sometimes referred to as pocket reduction surgery, refers to a number of different surgical procedures aimed at gaining access to the roots and supporting bone. Osseous surgery is used to reshape deformities in the jawbone thereby reducing periodontal pockets which have resulted from the disease process. These periodontal pockets continue to harbor bacteria that can lead to disease recurrence and/or disease progression. Other forms of periodontal surgery address bone regeneration when indicated. After your re-examination following initial nonsurgical therapy, Drs. Ira and Lori will discuss your surgical options.

The specific goals of surgery include:

  • Reducing Bacterial Spread:  Bacteria from the mouth can spread throughout the body and contribute to and/or exacerbate other life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, ED and respiratory diseases. Removing deep bacterial deposits can help reduce the risk of bacteria spreading to other parts of the body. As well as reduce the body’s overall inflammatory process.
  • Preventing Bone Loss:  The immune system’s inflammatory response prompted by periodontal bacteria can lead to bone loss in the jaw region, and cause tooth loss. Osseous surgery seeks to stop periodontal disease before it progresses to this level.
  • Enhancing the Smile:  Mouths infected with periodontal disease are often unsightly. Red swollen gums, calculus (tartar) covering teeth, and deformities in the soft tissue and jawbone can leave a person feeling embarrassed and self-conscious about their smile. Osseous surgery can help restore your mouth to a state of health and therefore improve your overall health.
  • Facilitating Home Care:  As the gum pocket deepens, it can become nearly impossible to brush and floss adequately below the gum line where disease activity occurs. Osseous surgery reduces pocket size, making it easier to brush and floss, and thereby prevent periodontal disease reoccurrence.
