“Periodontics is the dental specialty that focuses in the inflammatory disease that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth.”
WHAT IS A PERIODONTAL SPECIALIST?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. They are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. Extensive training in these areas, including at least three additional years of education beyond dental school, make periodontists highly knowledgeable with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.
Periodontists offer a wide range of services. The severity of gum disease will determine the course of treatment and all treatment is individually tailored for each patient. A comprehensive examination and thorough review medical and dental histories is necessary for diagnosis and treatment planning. It is extremely important for the periodontist to know if any medications are being taken or if the patient is being treated for any condition that can affect their periodontal care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy. Patients who present with moderate or severe levels of periodontal disease, or patients with more complex cases, will be best managed by a partnership between the dentist and the periodontist.
